book heaven

Took the boy to Waterstones today. It occurred to me, that if I was locked inside this book-filled paradise, permanently, I could probably serve a happy confinement. So many interesting books, so little time!

In the meantime, I bought a fine book for the boy. Which we started almost immediately. And of a Saturday evening, we are nearly half way through it, and as close to each other as I could hope to be… It would seem that a father who is unashamed to read out loud a well-chosen story to his boy (and also 30 adults within earshot in a M&S restaurant) lends that father a value that outstrips the cover price!

Here’s my point. Books should be seen as a staple – as necessary to daily life as a loaf of bread. But good books should also be elevated to the status afforded to luxury commodities – they are as delicate and fine as golden slivers of saffron or near unattainable wild Tibetan honey.

Portions should be generous. Serve warm and often.
